When we need to reset our goal strategy...

May 15, 2024

Hey there, wellness warriors! Let’s dive into a topic that's all too familiar: setting wellness goals and the journey to actually achieving them. We’ve all been there – starting off strong, full of motivation and determination, only to find ourselves a few weeks (or days!) later slipping back into old habits. So, why does this happen?

One of the biggest culprits is setting vague goals. Saying “I want to get healthier” sounds great, but what does that really mean? Without clear targets, it’s easy to lose focus and motivation. Unrealistic expectations also play a part. We’re often guilty of setting the bar too high too soon. While aiming for the stars is admirable, if your goal is to run a marathon but you haven’t jogged in years, you might need smaller milestones to get there.

Failing to plan is planning to fail, as they say. Without a roadmap of how you’ll achieve your goals, you’re more likely to get lost along the way. Trying to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight rarely works. Small, consistent changes tend to be more sustainable than drastic ones. Life happens – stress, unexpected events, and other priorities can derail even the best-laid plans.

So, how can we turn this around and set ourselves up for success? Enter SMART goals:

Define your goal clearly. Instead of “eating healthier,” try “eating 5 servings of vegetables daily.” Make sure you can track your progress. Use numbers or milestones like “lose 5 pounds” or “walk 30 minutes a day.” Set goals that stretch you slightly but are still within reach. Gradual progress is key. Your goals should align with your values and long-term objectives. Ask yourself why this goal matters to you. Give yourself a deadline. “Lose 5 pounds in 2 months” creates a sense of urgency and helps you stay focused.

Imagine setting a goal like this: “I will walk for 30 minutes, 5 days a week, for the next 3 months, to improve my cardiovascular health and boost my energy levels.” This goal is specific (30 minutes of walking), measurable (5 days a week), achievable (gradual increase), relevant (improving health), and time-bound (3 months).

Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are wellness goals. Celebrate small victories, learn from setbacks, and adjust your approach as needed. With SMART goals and a realistic mindset, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier, happier you.

Here’s to your journey towards holistic wellness – you’ve got this! 🌟
